For hundreds of years, Catholic schools in the United States have opened their doors and welcomed immigrants from all lands. These schools stood – and continue to stand – as a safe harbor for those new to this land, treating students with the respect they deserve as God's children.
Catholic schools will continue to open their doors to all children in recognition of God's love for His people, no matter a child's place of birth. The Alliance for Catholic Education and the Institute for Educational Initiatives stand with the University of Notre Dame and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in support of those enrolled in Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). They came to this country as minors, and many remember only the United States as their home. To deport this group of people – those who have built lives contributing to our nation – is to turn our back on Jesus' call to serve God's treasured children.
We urge the President and Congress to find a legislative solution that would allow DACA enrollees to live permanently in the United States. To those affected by this decision, we pledge our support, action and prayers on your behalf. You will always be welcome in our classrooms.
